Class GRAPTOLITHINAE (the graptolites)

Graptolites are mostly represented by white, silver, brown, grey or black, carbonaceous imprints on rocks.  They were colonial marine organisms, and may have lived in the Paleozoic equivalents of the Sargasso Sea.  They are useful index fossils of the Paleozoic, especially in black shales.
