Themes > Science > Chemistry > Nuclear Chemistry > Nuclear Chemistry Index > Atomic Nomenclature: the Electron

The electron is a subatomic particle. It has a charge of -1 atomic units and a mass of 0.00055 atomic mass units. Unlike the proton and neutron, it resides in an orbital some distance away from the nucleus. A neutral atom has the same number of protons and electrons: adding or subtracting an electron from an atom forms an ion.
